What is a Rheostat?
A rheostat is a variable wire wound resistor used to control current flow in a circuit by adjusting the effective resistance. Unlike fixed resistors, rheostats allow continuous adjustment — making them essential for applications requiring real-time power regulation.
ETCC rheostats use precision-wound resistance wire on high-temperature ceramic formers, with a sliding contact (wiper) that moves across the winding to vary resistance from near-zero to the full rated value.

Rheostat vs Fixed Resistor
A fixed wire wound resistor dissipates a set amount of power at a constant resistance value. A rheostat provides the same wire wound construction and power handling but adds a moveable wiper contact, allowing the operator to continuously vary resistance from minimum to maximum during operation.
Choose a rheostat when your application requires real-time adjustment — such as motor speed trimming, voltage calibration, or load simulation. Choose a fixed resistor when the resistance value is determined at design time and does not need to change during operation.
